 Types of Bus UsageSchool Buses

The yellow school bus is perhaps the most important vehicle in North America. Many of our children begin and end their “education day” on a school bus. The yellow school bus is proven to be the safest form of land transportation* available. In fact, when specifically compared as a mode of transportation to and from school, school buses are statistically 9 times safer* than all other combined modes.

At Carolina Thomas, we approach the responsibility of transporting children with one simple philosophy: sell the kind of bus we would want our own children to ride in. That’s why we are proud to offer school buses from Thomas Built Buses, North America's leading school bus manufacturer.

Since 1936, Thomas Built Buses has engineered and built the smartest, most innovative line of school buses available. More than one third of the school buses on the road today are Thomas Built Buses.

Thomas Built Buses manufactures three different types of buses: Type C conventional buses, Type D transit-style buses for longer routes and increased seating capacity, and smaller Type A Minotour buses.

*Interesting School Bus Facts:
  • 500,000 yellow school buses provide transportation service daily nationwide.
  • 26 million school children ride school buses daily.
  • 52 million student trips are taken daily plus an estimated 5 million for extracurricular activities.
  • School buses travel approximately 4.4 billion miles each school year.
  • According to the National Safety Council, the national school bus accident rate is 0.01 per 100 million miles traveled, compared to 0.04 for trains, 0.06 for commercial aviation and 0.96 for other passenger vehicles.
  • Therefore, the federal government considers school buses to be about nine times safer that other passenger vehicles during the normal school commute. (According to the National Safety Council a yellow school bus is safer than a train or a plane.)
