On November 1, 2007, Carolina Trans Air became the Trans/Air Manufacturing Corporation bus and coach air conditioning distributor for the state of North Carolina. In this capacity Carolina Trans Air is authorized by Trans/Air Manufacturing Corporation to sell and install Trans/Air bus and coach air conditioning at its facility in North Carolina. Carolina Trans Air also is an authorized Trans/Air service center providing air conditioning replacement parts and service for Trans/Air products.

The Carolina Trans Air facility is located at 6327 Burnt Poplar Road in Greensboro, NC. This location is easily accessible from Interstate 40 and very convenient to the Piedmont Triad International Airport for customers flying in to pick up buses. Our facility is a 20,000 plus square foot building on a 4.5 paved acres of land. We are a full bus service location and while the complete facility is not dedicated to our air conditioning business, a large part of our building is dedicated to air conditioning installation, service and support.

All of our installation team members are fully trained and ASE certified for air conditioning service and installation. The basic components that you will find on an air conditioning system in the transportation industry are compressor, condenser, evaporator, and refrigerant.

An air conditioner is basically a REFRIGERATOR without the insulated box. It uses the evaporation of a refrigerant Freon® to provide cooling. The mechanics of the Freon evaporation cycle are the same in a refrigerator as in an air conditioner for a bus.

This is how the evaporation cycle in an air conditioner works:

1. The compressor compresses cool Freon gas, causing it to become hot high-pressure Freon gas (red in the diagram above).
2. This hot gas runs through a set of coils so it can dissipate its heat, and it condenses (in condenser) into a liquid.
3. The Freon liquid runs through an expansion valve, and in the process it evaporates (in evaporator) to become cold, low-pressure Freon gas (light blue in the diagram above).
4. This cold gas runs through a set of coils in the evaporator that allow the gas to absorb heat and cool down the air. Fan motors in the evaporator blow air across the cold evaporator coils injecting cold air into the passenger compartment for cooling.

Mixed in with the Freon is a small amount of a light weight oil. This oil lubricates the compressor. This is the general concept for air conditioning your bus. The diagram below is an example of the basic air conditioning system which is installed in a bus.
